| India won the toss and will bowl | |||
| Hello and welcome to the bbb coverage of the third NatWest Series one-day international match between England and India, coming to you from the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. | |||
| This is the third match of the long seven-match series and the first to be played purely in the daylight. The first two games were day/night contests and we are now level after a cracking, enjoyable clash at Bristol which saw India post yet another 300+ score on that ground (the third time in three games they had achieved it) only to see England come within just nine runs of overhauling it. | |||
| To be honest, England were always just behind the clock and only some big hitting late on from Dimitri Mascarenhas with a maiden ODI fifty and 20 runs in the last over from Stuart Broad gave the result a slightly false impression but, nevertheless, it was a highly entertaining encounter which levels up the series and we arrive here full of optimism for the rest. | |||
| The only downside from the game was yet another injury to England's key allrounder Andrew Flintoff. He claimed career-best bowling figures during the match at Bristol (5-56) but collided with a boundary hoarding while diving to save a four and hurt his knee. He has been for the obligatory scan and has had a cortisone injection to help the pain behind his right knee. Thankfully for England, it was not the oh-so-troublesome left ankle. | |||
| Gloucestershire swing bowler Jon Lewis has been drafted into the squad as cover while Ryan Sidebottom is still being given time to recover from a side strain. It will be decided soon whether he will take any part in the series. India might stick to the side that won the game at Bristol but Ajit Agarkar's place might be under threat after two rather ordinary performances thus far. | |||
| Who will win? The last game has thrown the series wide open now and both sides have decent records on this ground. But this time, England might just fancy their chances. | |||
| This is the 41st one-day international match played on this ground. England have played in 27 of them and won 15 and lost 11 with one no-result. India have played four and have a 50-50 record with two wins and two defeats. | |||
| The leading run scorer on this ground is Graham Gooch with 338 runs in 9 innings (average 37.55) while the head wicket-taker is Darren Gough with 21 in 11 games (average 22.66). | |||
| This will be the 61st time these two sides have met in an ODI. The last time before this series was in Jaipur during the Champions Trophy and India won that by 4 wickets chasing down just 126 to win. Overall, the record stands at England 27 India 31 with 2 no-results. | |||
| The highest individual score for England v India is 137 by Dennis Amiss at Lord's in 1975. | |||
| The highest individual score for India v England is 134* by Navjot Singh Sidhu at Gwalior at 1992/1993. | |||
| The best bowling performance for England v India is 5-26 by Ronnie Irani at The Oval in 2002. | |||
| The best bowling performance for India v England is 6-23 by Ashish Nehra at Durban in 2002/2003. | |||
| Billy Doctrove from the West Indies is the neutral man for this game and he is joined by Mark Benson from England. Peter Hartley moves up to third umpire while Nigel Llong is the fourth. Roshan Mahanama is the match referee | |||
