| India won the toss and will bowl | |||
| Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the first NatWest Series one-day international match between England and India, coming to you from the Hampshire Rose Bowl in Southampton. | |||
| This is the first match of the long seven-match series, the longest two-team tournament ever to have been held in this country, and it comes after India's hard-fought 1-0 Test series win so they will be coming into this with plenty of confidence, especially against an English side that's one-day record in recent history is fairly ordinary. | |||
| Both sides make multiple changes to the squads that battled out the Test series. Most of the changes are exciting, including the return of England's talismanic all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as well as many so-called one-day specialists in Ravi Bopara, Owais Shah and Dimitri Mascarenhas. India have their own key all-rounder back in the squad with Yuvraj Singh returning as well as some exciting young talent in leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, Robin Uthappa and Rohit Sharma. So it should make for an interesting series. | |||
| Quite a few of the pundits are not really giving England much hope to impressing in this series. Many are predicting a 7-0 whitewash but surely the weather will put paid to some! Some are even saying that a 5-2 defeat for the home side will be some kind of progress! The hosts have already said they are building towards the next World Cup, hence the inclusion of some young promising talent like Stuart Broad. But they know that this India side is packed full of experience, particularly in the batting. It is no secret that three of the top five batsmen have 10,000 ODI runs to their name. | |||
| It is in the bowling department that India fear themselves. The bowling is nowhere near as strong as the batting and much will be heaped on the shoulder of Zaheer Khan. England on the other hand have plenty of good pace bowling in the frame of Flintoff, Broad, Sidebottom, Anderson and Tremlett. India's frailties in the bowling showed at Northampton where the England Lions (techinically England's Second XI) posted over 290 before the rain came. | |||
| Team news - already out of the game today is Ryan Sidebottom, who has not recovered from his side strain he picked up during the third Test at The Oval. India have no real injury doubts so their selection will make for interesting reading. | |||
| Who will win? It is very difficult to think who will win, particularly on this hard-to-predict ground in Southampton. It is a new stadium and the wicket, while getting better, still has many critics. England will want to get off to a good start and they will have to knock down the strong Indian batting if they are to have any chance. | |||
| This is the 9th one-day international match played on this ground. England have played just two of them and won one and lost one thus far. India played against Kenya in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy and won that game so they have a 100% record. | |||
| The leading run scorer on this ground is Andrew Flintoff, who struck a century against Sri Lanka (104) while the head wicket-taker is Merv Dillon with 5, thanks to his 5-29 for the West Indies against Bangladesh in that same tournament. | |||
| This will be the 59th time these two sides have met in an ODI. The last time before this series was in Jaipur during the Champions Trophy and India won that by 4 wickets chasing down just 126 to win. Overall, the record stands at England 26 India 30 with 2 no-results. | |||
| The highest individual score for England v India is 137 by Dennis Amiss at Lord's in 1975. | |||
| The highest individual score for India v England is 134* by Navjot Singh Sidhu at Gwalior at 1992/1993. | |||
| The best bowling performance for England v India is 5-26 by Ronnie Irani at The Oval in 2002. | |||
| The best bowling performance for India v England is 6-23 by Ashish Nehra at Durban in 2002/2003. | |||
| Billy Doctrove from the West Indies is the neutral man for this game and he is joined by Mark Benson from England. Nigel Llong is the third umpire and Ian Gould, who turned 50 on Sunday, is the fourth. Roshan Mahanama is the match referee. | |||
| It is overcast conditions here at The Rose Bowl, Southampton that's why Dravid opts to bowl first | |||
